California's consumer privacy laws are the strictest in the United States. The California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA) and California Privacy Rights Act (CPRA) give California residents unprecedented control over their personal information — and create significant obligations for businesses.

This course provides essential awareness training for all staff who handle California consumer data, interact with customers, or contribute to compliance efforts. Through clear explanations and practical examples, participants learn what the laws require, how to recognize and respond to consumer requests, and their role in protecting privacy.

Equip your team with the knowledge to navigate California's landmark privacy laws. This comprehensive awareness course covers CCPA and CPRA requirements, consumer rights, request handling, and compliance best practices.

Why learn about CCPA/CPRA?

  • Regulatory pressure is increasing — the California Privacy Protection Agency now has full authority to audit businesses proactively
  • The rules affect everyday work — whether answering customer calls, designing websites, or managing marketing campaigns
  • California sets the U.S. standard — CCPA/CPRA has influenced privacy laws in Colorado, Virginia, Connecticut, and other states
  • Reduce your risk of financial penalties and reputational damage from non-compliance
  • Ensure staff understand their role in protecting consumer privacy and know when to escalate

The California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA) was enacted in 2018, while the California Privacy Rights Act (CPRA) amended and expanded it in 2020. CPRA added new consumer rights (correction, limiting sensitive PI), created the California Privacy Protection Agency, and introduced stricter requirements. This course covers both.

CCPA/CPRA applies to for-profit businesses that collect California consumers' personal information AND meet one of these thresholds: annual gross revenue over $25 million, buy/sell/share personal information of 100,000+ consumers/households, or derive 50%+ of annual revenue from selling/sharing personal information.

The California Privacy Protection Agency can impose penalties of up to $2,500 per unintentional violation and $7,500 per intentional violation. For violations involving minors, penalties are $7,500 per violation. Consumers can also bring private lawsuits for data breaches.

While both cover privacy compliance, this course focuses specifically on California law requirements, consumer rights under CCPA/CPRA, and US-specific enforcement. If your organisation handles both California and UK/EU data, we recommend taking both courses. Our GDPR Essentials course covers UK and EU requirements.
